CVE-2024-1737Network attack vector

Remote query slowdown via unbounded RR collections

Published Jul 23, 2024 · Updated Feb 13, 2025

Algorithmic complexity in BIND 9 allows remote attackers to slow DNS query processing via oversized resource-record collections. Its cache and zone database accept unbounded records per rdataset and record types per owner name, making additions, updates, and lookups increasingly expensive. Unauthenticated DNS access can induce the condition on a recursive server through received responses; authoritative exposure also depends on malicious or attacker-controlled zone data, and query processing can become 100 times slower.
