CVE-2024-1631Network attack vector

Identity impersonation via zero-filled Ed25519 seed

Published Feb 21, 2024 · Updated Aug 16, 2024

Insecure key generation in DFINITY agent-js 0.20.0-beta.0 through 1.0.0 allows attackers to impersonate generated identities. Ed25519KeyIdentity.generate defaults an omitted seed to a zero-filled 32-byte array, so every seedless call derives the same private key instead of requesting randomness. Applications are exposed only when they use seedless Ed25519 generation; the known key permits control of associated funds or canisters.
