Server and mobile crashes via unbounded emoji reactions
Published Feb 9, 2024 · Updated Aug 1, 2024
Resource exhaustion in Mattermost allows remote authenticated users to crash the server by adding excessive emoji reactions to a post. SaveReactionForPost accepts custom emoji names without verifying that they exist and imposes no per-post limit on unique reactions, so post retrieval processes an attacker-expanded reaction set. Access to react to a post is required; retrieving the affected post overloads the server, and viewing it in the mobile app crashes that client.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
- Affected versionversion=0 <=8.1.7
