Subscriber-to-Administrator escalation via unchecked option updates
Published Jan 30, 2025 · Updated Apr 8, 2026
Privilege escalation in DeluxeThemes Media Manager for UserPro 3.12.0 and earlier gives remote authenticated users admin access via option updates. The upm_upload_media() function omits a capability check and accepts Subscriber-controlled updates to arbitrary WordPress options. Subscriber-level access is sufficient to set the default registration role to administrator and enable registration, allowing a newly registered account to control the site.
