CVE-2024-12797Network attack vector

Server impersonation via ignored RPK verification failure

Published Feb 11, 2025 · Updated Feb 18, 2025

Authentication failure in OpenSSL allows man-in-the-middle attackers to impersonate servers during RPK-authenticated TLS or DTLS sessions. The tls_post_process_server_rpk path records a failed ssl_verify_rpk result but lets the handshake complete because it does not honor SSL_VERIFY_PEER. Exposure requires both peers to enable RPKs and a client to rely on handshake failure instead of checking SSL_get_verify_result; RPKs are disabled by default.
