CVE-2024-1244Network attack vector

Code execution and SYSTEM escalation via UNC authentication

Published Jun 11, 2025 · Updated Jun 11, 2025

Improper path validation in OSSEC HIDS Agent before 3.8.0 allows remote attackers controlling its server to steal NetNTLMv2 hashes. The Windows agent accepts a server-supplied UNC path and authenticates to the referenced SMB share with its machine account instead of rejecting the path. Control of the OSSEC server or possession of the agent key is required; a captured hash supports credential relay or SYSTEM escalation through AD CS.
