Administrator account takeover via unchecked password reset
Published Mar 19, 2025 · Updated Apr 8, 2026
Privilege escalation in Px-Lab BoomBox Theme Extensions 1.8.0 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to take over administrator accounts. The boombox_ajax_reset_password function updates a selected account password without validating that the requester owns that account. Subscriber-level access is sufficient to replace an administrator password, enabling account takeover and loss of access for the targeted user.
