Root code execution via unchecked archive paths
Published Dec 30, 2024 · Updated Dec 30, 2024
Path traversal in iocage updates in iXsystems TrueNAS CORE 13.3-RELEASE allows attackers to execute arbitrary code as root. The update path passes an attacker-controlled archive path to tarfile.extractall without validating that extracted files remain inside the intended directory. Exploitation requires unauthenticated adjacent-network access and another vulnerability in the chain; successful attacks can overwrite root-owned paths and run code as root.
