Root privilege escalation via improper file permissions
Published Jan 14, 2025 · Updated Jan 14, 2025
Privilege escalation in Phoenix Contact CHARX SEC-3xxx firmware before 1.7.0 allows remote authenticated users to gain root access. The firmware assigns improper permissions to a critical file accessible to the low-privileged user-app account; Phoenix Contact does not identify the file or operation. Successful exploitation grants full control of the controller, but it requires valid user-app access to a network-reachable management interface.
