CVE-2024-10972

System crash via memory-permission TOCTOU race

Published Dec 16, 2024 · Updated Sep 5, 2025

TOCTOU race in Velocidex WinPmem 4.1 and earlier allows local users with administrator access to trigger a Windows BSOD. The driver validates a user-controlled memory page only at routine entry, then continues using it after another thread changes its access permissions. Administrator privileges and a concurrently timed permission change are required; successful exploitation crashes the host rather than granting additional access.
