UI spoofing via hidden external-protocol prompt origin
Published Oct 29, 2024 · Updated Nov 3, 2025
Origin validation error in Firefox before 132, Firefox ESR before 128.4, and Thunderbird before 132 allows remote attackers to spoof content. The external-protocol dialog's principal display logic in permissionDialog.js omits the initiating origin when a data: URL is loaded in an iframe over another site. The attack requires a user to open the crafted page and click its link, enabling a deceptive external-application prompt without direct code execution or data access.
