Privilege escalation via incomplete DevTools access checks
Published Jan 23, 2024 · Updated Jun 20, 2025
Privilege escalation in Firefox before 122, Firefox ESR before 115.7, and Thunderbird before 115.7 allows attackers to run privileged extension code. The devtools.inspectedWindow.eval access check used an incomplete scheme denylist, allowing view-source URLs to conceal restricted moz-extension and AMO origins. Exploitation requires a malicious DevTools extension with inspected-tab access and a user opening DevTools; the extension can script other extensions and restricted pages.
