Phishing via stale popup origin display
Published Jan 23, 2024 · Updated May 22, 2025
Origin spoofing in Mozilla Firefox before 122 and Thunderbird before 115.7 allows remote attackers to display phishing content with a false origin. The site-identity handler processes an onSecurityChange event while a popup is still about:blank, then fails to refresh the identity block after the final location change. A user must visit the phishing page and open its popup, which can falsely label attacker-controlled content as a page stored locally.
