Local privilege escalation via installer-name newline injection
Published Mar 11, 2024 · Updated Jan 28, 2025
Improper input validation in Google Android 12 through 15 allows local users to run as other apps through a crafted installer name. PackageInstallerService accepts newline and space characters in an installer package name, which injects forged records into packages.list and makes run-as treat a target app as debuggable. Exploitation requires ADB shell access and permits reading or writing private app data and executing in most app contexts, but not as the system user.
