SYSTEM shell via interactive MSI repair console
Published Jun 27, 2024 · Updated Feb 13, 2025
Privilege escalation in affected SoftMaker Office 2024/NX and FreeOffice MSI installations allows local users to gain a SYSTEM shell. The repair action launches 7z.exe or syspin.exe as SYSTEM in an interactive console, and an oplock stalls the file read so the window remains usable. The chain requires a low-privileged GUI session, an MSI-based installation, and Chrome or Firefox available but not already running.
