Cross-account avatar modification via unchecked user ID
Published Jan 22, 2024 · Updated Jun 11, 2025
Authorization bypass in WP User Profile Avatar before 1.0.1 allows remote authenticated users to update or delete arbitrary avatars. The remove_user_avatar and update_user_avatar AJAX handlers accept a user-controlled user_id and apply the requested avatar change without verifying authority over that account. Author-level WordPress access is required; the consequence is limited to changing or removing profile-avatar data for other users.
