SYSTEM code execution via writable repair temporary file
Published Oct 18, 2024 · Updated Apr 1, 2026
Local privilege escalation in Lakeside Software SysTrack Agent 10.7.8 allows local users to execute arbitrary code as SYSTEM via MSI repair. The repair action copies a formula-named executable into the initiating user's writable %TEMP% directory, waits briefly, and then runs it as SYSTEM; namespace exhaustion makes the fallback filename predictable and permits replacement before execution. Any authenticated standard local user who can invoke MSI repair and win the replacement race gains a SYSTEM process, with full control of the host.
