Local privilege escalation via driver IOCTL race
Published Nov 8, 2023 · Updated Sep 3, 2024
Out-of-bounds write in Avast/Avg Antivirus 23.8 allows local users to gain full privileges through crafted IOCTL requests. The aswSnx.sys driver checks request state and later uses it after that state can change, permitting an out-of-bounds write during IOCTL handling. Exploitation requires low-privileged local access and user interaction, and successful exploitation grants full system privileges.
