Local integrity impact via Mercurial revision option injection
Published Oct 24, 2023 · Updated Nov 3, 2025
Command injection in Python Packaging Authority pip before 23.3 allows local users to alter Mercurial clone configuration via crafted revisions. The Mercurial backend passed a revision as a separate -r argument, allowing option-like text to inject --config settings into hg clone and change which repository content pip installed. Exploitation requires a local user or build process to install from an attacker-controlled Mercurial URL; users who do not install from Mercurial are not affected, and the documented impact is repository and installation integrity rather than service disruption.
