Account takeover via nonce-free password reset
Published Jan 11, 2024 · Updated Apr 8, 2026
Cross-site request forgery in WP Register Profile With Shortcode 3.5.9 and earlier allows remote attackers to reset a user's password. The update_password_validate function processes the rpws_user_update_password form action without validating an anti-CSRF nonce before changing the current user's password. Exploitation requires an authenticated user to submit a forged request, after which the attacker can take over that user's account, including an administrator account.
