Kernel disruption via invalid erase-type shift
Published Dec 30, 2025 · Updated Dec 30, 2025
Out-of-bounds shifting in the Linux kernel allows local users to disrupt the system through SPI-NOR erase-type masking. In spi_nor_set_erase_type, masking an erase type with a zero size subtracts one from a zero shift value and uses the resulting 4294967295 as a 32-bit shift exponent. The path requires local access and the affected SPI-NOR driver state; no remote trigger is identified.
