CVE-2023-54265

Uninitialized kernel value access via raw IPv6 socket

Published Dec 30, 2025 · Updated Dec 30, 2025

Use of an uninitialized value in the Linux kernel allows local users to trigger a kernel memory-safety fault through an IPv6 raw socket. In __ip6_make_skb(), the code reads icmp6_hdr(skb)->icmp6_type even when the ICMPv6 header is outside the socket buffer's linear region. Creating the required raw socket requires CAP_NET_RAW, and the upstream record establishes no crash, disclosure, or other concrete security consequence.
