Kernel deadlock via interrupt-unsafe vmalloc lookup
Published Dec 24, 2025 · Updated Dec 24, 2025
Denial of service in affected Linux kernel branches starting at 5.12 allows attackers to trigger a kernel deadlock. The mm/util.c diagnostic path calls vmalloc_dump_obj for a non-slab rcu_head and takes vmap_area_lock even when call_rcu runs in interrupt context. Triggering requires a double call_rcu on such an object; the published record identifies rcutorture on Preempt-RT as a reproducer but no attacker-controlled path.
