CVE-2023-54042

Local kernel compromise via premature mm release

Published Dec 24, 2025 · Updated Dec 24, 2025

Use-after-free in PowerPC VAS support in Linux allows local users to corrupt kernel memory through an NX-gzip transmit window. VAS window teardown calls mmdrop() before mm_context_remove_vas_window(), so the latter reads and writes a freed mm_struct. An unprivileged local account can trigger the sequence through open(), VAS_TX_WIN_OPEN, and process exit, causing disclosure, corruption, or a kernel panic.
