CVE-2023-53845

Task hangs via misclassified virtual-block translation failure

Published Dec 9, 2025 · Updated May 11, 2026

Denial of service in Linux nilfs2 starting with 2.6.30 allows local users to hang tasks by mounting a corrupted disk image. nilfs_bmap_lookup_at_level() returns -ENOENT for failed virtual-block translation, so nilfs_mdt_get_block() mistakes corruption for a missing block and repeatedly reads and creates metadata blocks. Triggering the flaw requires permission to mount an attacker-controlled NILFS2 image; when ifile is involved, i_rwsem remains held and lock_mount tasks hang.
