Kernel memory corruption via CIFS hostname race
Published Dec 8, 2025 · Updated Aug 5, 2026
Use-after-free in the Linux CIFS client allows remote attackers to corrupt kernel memory through malicious DFS referral responses. During reconnect, unprotected readers dereference TCP_Server_Info::hostname while DFS referral handling can free and replace that pointer. An established DFS CIFS mount lets a malicious SMB peer repeatedly force reconnects, exposing kernel data, corrupting memory, or causing a kernel panic.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
