System crash via architecture-unaware devdax vmemmap handling
Published Oct 22, 2025 · Updated Oct 22, 2025
A devdax probing flaw in Linux 5.19 through 6.3.4 allows local users to crash ppc64 systems during device initialization. vmemmap_populate_compound_pages assumes optimized vmemmap mappings exist in the init_mm page table, while powerpc hash translation instead uses bolted hardware-page-table entries. The demonstrated gate is a ppc64 hash-MMU system with devdax; probing the device triggers a bad-area kernel fault and interrupts the system.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
