CVE-2023-53686

Kernel oops via failed handshake socket lookup

Published Oct 7, 2025 · Updated Oct 7, 2025

NULL pointer dereference in Linux kernel 6.4 through 6.5.3 allows local users to cause a kernel oops via a crafted netlink request. In handshake_nl_done_doit(), a failed socket lookup still reaches trace_handshake_cmd_done_err(), while another error path can trace sock->sk after releasing its file. Low-privileged local access is required; successful triggering interrupts the host through a kernel oops without reported data disclosure or modification.
