CVE-2023-53582

Kernel crash via unterminated CLM version string

Published Oct 4, 2025 · Updated Oct 4, 2025

An out-of-bounds read in Linux kernel brcmfmac allows local users to crash the kernel through a malformed CLM firmware version string. brcmf_fil_iovar_data_get copies the firmware-supplied string into buf without ensuring termination, and brcmf_c_preinit_dcmds then passes it to strreplace, which reads beyond the stack buffer. Exploitation requires local access and initialization of brcmfmac with a nonterminated CLM response; the documented consequence is an availability loss.
