CVE-2023-53517Network attack vector

Remote crash via unchecked TIPC MTU negotiation

Published Oct 1, 2025 · Updated Oct 1, 2025

Integer overflow in the Linux kernel TIPC subsystem allows remote attackers to crash a system via a small-MTU Activate message. tipc_link_proto_rcv accepts a peer-supplied MTU without enforcing tipc_bearer_min_mtu, and tipc_link_mss subtracts header overhead until the value wraps to 4294967228. Exploitation requires an active TIPC bearer and a peer able to participate in link negotiation; the disclosed result is oversized buffer allocation followed by a kernel crash.
