Kernel memory disclosure and crash via short frames
Published Sep 16, 2025 · Updated Sep 16, 2025
Out-of-bounds read in the Linux mac80211_hwsim module allows local users to disclose kernel memory or crash the host via a short frame. mac80211_hwsim_rx reads address fields beyond an undersized HWSIM_ATTR_FRAME payload into uninitialized or out-of-bounds skb-head memory. Reachability requires registration as wmediumd or virtio mode; user and network namespaces can supply CAP_NET_ADMIN, and no user interaction is needed.
