CVE-2023-53148

Task hang via repeated igb teardown

Published Sep 15, 2025 · Updated Sep 15, 2025

Denial of service in the Linux kernel igb driver allows physically proximate attackers to hang a task by unplugging a Thunderbolt hub. During surprise removal, igb_io_error_detected and igb_remove both call igb_down, leaving the second call blocked at napi_synchronize. The condition requires the affected Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet setup and physical cable removal; it interrupts Ethernet connectivity and produces a hung-task timeout.
