CVE-2023-53065

Local privilege escalation via perf BPF stack overwrite

Published May 2, 2025 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Memory corruption in Linux kernel builds with commit 267fb27352b6 but without a branch fix allows local users to overwrite kernel stack memory. perf_event_bpf_output passes a small on-stack perf_bpf_event object where perf_output_begin expects a larger perf_sample_data object, so __perf_event_header__init_id writes beyond the stack object. Reaching the path requires CAP_PERFMON plus CAP_BPF or a user-namespace-reachable CAP_NET_ADMIN; successful corruption permits host-kernel code execution or a kernel panic.
