CVE-2023-52897

Kernel warning via null qgroup old_roots

Published Aug 21, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026

Improper qgroup record handling in Linux 6.1 through 6.1.7 allows local users to trigger a kernel warning during a Btrfs rescan. The btrfs_qgroup_account_extents() path applies WARN_ON() to a qgroup_record whose old_roots pointer can remain null after NO_ACCOUNTING skips back-reference collection and a rescan clears that flag. Reachability requires inconsistent Btrfs qgroups, a record created while accounting is disabled, and a locally initiated rescan; the default result is a warning, while panic_on_warn=1 turns the warning into a kernel panic.
