CVE-2023-52617

Kernel crash via stale Switchtec DMA cleanup

Published Mar 18, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026

Incomplete cleanup in affected Linux kernel releases allows local users to crash the kernel after surprise removal of a Switchtec PCI device. stdev_release() writes through an already removed mmio_mrpc mapping and can pass a stale pdev device pointer to dma_free_coherent(). Exploitation requires high local privileges, DMA mode, and an open Switchtec character device during hot removal; the result is a fatal page fault.
