Host-process state corruption via guest FPC validation
Published Mar 6, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026
Register-state corruption in the Linux KVM s390 backend allows local users to alter a host process's floating-point behavior. kvm_arch_vcpu_ioctl_set_fpu() temporarily loads an untrusted guest FPC value for validation, letting an interrupt save it as host state. Exploitation requires a permitted KVM vCPU FPU ioctl, a precisely timed interrupt, and floating-point or vector use in interrupt context; the host process then resumes with the guest-supplied control value.
