CVE-2023-52569

Kernel crash via duplicate Btrfs directory index

Published Mar 2, 2024 · Updated May 23, 2026

Reachable assertion in Linux before 6.1.56, 6.2 through 6.5.5, and 6.6-rc1 allows local users to crash the kernel via Btrfs operations. btrfs_insert_delayed_dir_index() calls BUG() instead of unwinding resources when a duplicate directory index cannot be inserted into the delayed node tree. The path requires local low-privileged access to exercise Btrfs directory operations; a hit stops the running kernel, while the duplicate-index cause remains unresolved.
