Kernel crash via non-TCP sk_msg redirection
Published Mar 2, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026
NULL pointer dereference in Linux 5.13 through affected 6.x branches allows local users to crash the kernel via BPF sk_msg redirection. The sockmap send path treats a selected non-TCP egress socket as tcp_sock and passes it into TCP-only processing, causing an invalid downcast and kernel NULL pointer dereference. Exploitation requires local BPF socket-map setup with CAP_NET_ADMIN or CAP_BPF; the demonstrated consequence is an oops or panic that interrupts the host.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
