CVE-2023-52501

Kernel memory disclosure and crash via ring-buffer race

Published Mar 2, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026

An out-of-bounds read in the Linux kernel ring buffer allows local users to disclose kernel memory or crash the system. During concurrent iteration, rb_event_length() treats a transient zero in a four-byte event header as an extended-length marker and reads four bytes past the committed page boundary. A low-privileged local user must race an active ring-buffer writer against a reader; the bounded consequences are kernel-memory disclosure and a kernel crash.
