Manager demotion or deactivation via missing target checks
Published Sep 29, 2023 · Updated Sep 5, 2024
Incorrect authorization in Mattermost 7.8.9 and earlier and 8.1.0 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to demote or deactivate managers. The user-demotion and deactivation paths validate the acting account's manager role but fail to reject a peer manager as the target. A system/user manager session is required; exploitation removes a peer manager's role or interrupts that account's access without exposing data.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
- Affected versionversion=0 <=7.8.9

What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
