CVE-2023-51797Public exploit

Local code execution via unchecked history size

Published Apr 19, 2024 · Updated Nov 4, 2025

Heap-buffer overflow in FFmpeg N113007-g8d24a28d06 allows local users to execute arbitrary code through the showwaves audio filter. The config_output function accepts a nonpositive history_nb_samples value, allocates an unusable history buffer, and showwaves_filter_frame then indexes beyond it. Exploitation requires a local FFmpeg invocation that processes attacker-controlled input through showwaves; successful exploitation exposes process data and code execution.
