Cross-site scripting via unescaped group-member messages
Published Dec 22, 2023 · Updated Nov 4, 2025
XSS in MediaWiki before 1.35.14, 1.36.0 through 1.39.5, and 1.40.0 through 1.40.1 allows remote attackers to run script in rights-log viewers. RightsLogFormatter inserts group-*-member message text into old and new group lists as raw HTML rather than applying output escaping. Exploitation requires attacker-controlled message content and a rights-log view; successful payloads execute in the viewer's browser and can read or modify page data.
