Application crashes via zero-length regex matches
Published Dec 27, 2023 · Updated Apr 17, 2025
Denial of service in Hutool Core 5.8.23 and earlier allows remote attackers to crash applications via crafted split inputs. PatternFinder.start returns the unchanged position for a zero-length regex match, causing SplitIter.computeNext to retry recursively without advancing. Exploitation requires an application to pass attacker-controlled text and regex values to splitByRegex; empty values exhaust heap or stack memory and terminate the process.
