CVE-2023-50982Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Remote code execution via unchecked smiley extension

Published Jan 8, 2024 · Updated Jun 3, 2025

Unrestricted file upload in Stud.IP 5.x through 5.3.3 allows remote authenticated users to execute code through a crafted smiley file. Admin_SmileysController upload_action and edit_action trust a client-supplied image MIME type without validating the filename extension, so PHP is stored beneath the web root and executed. Exploitation normally requires a basic account to plant an XSS payload and a root-role user to view it, after which code runs with www-data privileges.
