Root command execution via unvalidated host_deny input
Published Apr 19, 2024 · Updated Aug 2, 2024
Command injection in Wazuh 4.2.0 through 4.7.1 allows attackers to execute commands as root through crafted active-response events. The host_deny script copies an event's srcip value into /etc/hosts.deny without validation, allowing a crafted spawn directive to invoke an arbitrary command. Access to the server's local execd queue yields local privilege escalation, while access to the ar queue forwards the command to an agent for root execution.
