Application crash via unchecked EXIF read
Published Dec 7, 2023 · Updated Nov 26, 2024
Out-of-bounds read in libheif 1.17.5 allows remote attackers to crash an application when it converts a crafted HEIF image. During PNG conversion, the find_exif_tag path calls read16 on crafted EXIF data, and the helper reads beyond the supplied metadata buffer. An application must process the file; the demonstrated consequence is a process crash, with no public evidence of code execution or data disclosure.
