CVE-2023-4936

Local privilege escalation via DLL sideloading

Published Oct 11, 2023 · Updated Sep 18, 2024

DLL sideloading in DisplayLink USB Graphics Software for Windows through 11.1 M1 lets local users gain elevated privileges during installation. The setup.exe installer honors a same-name .local directory and loads attacker-supplied comctl32.dll files from redirected WinSxS paths. Exploitation requires local file placement and execution of the EXE installer; the result is code running with the installer’s elevated privileges.
