Desktop spoofing and panel denial via predictable file
Published Dec 14, 2023 · Updated May 21, 2025
Improper temporary-file handling in Ubuntu Budgie Budgie Extras 1.4.0 through 1.7.0 allows local users to alter displayed break data. The Takeabreak applet reads /tmp/nextbreak_, splits its attacker-controlled contents on a period, and displays the first element as the next break time. Any local account can pre-create the world-editable path to spoof the desktop display or substitute a FIFO that blocks the applet and can interrupt the Budgie panel.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
