User impersonation via cleartext HMAC secret storage
Published Nov 24, 2023 · Updated Aug 2, 2024
Cleartext credential storage in CodeIgniter Shield before 1.0.0-beta.8 allows attackers with database access to impersonate HMAC users. The generateHmacToken() path persisted secretKey as the identity record's secret2 value without encrypting it. Exploitation requires access to both the stored key and secretKey; the recovered pair signs requests as the corresponding user.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
