Unauthorized erasure via predictable verification codes
Published Nov 15, 2023 · Updated Aug 29, 2024
Weak code generation in Ethyca Fides before 2.24.0 allows remote attackers to verify unauthorized erasure and consent requests. The generate_id_verification_code function selects six-digit codes with Python random.choice, exposing a predictable sequence instead of cryptographic randomness. Exploitation requires identity verification to be enabled and several hundred consecutive codes from one backend process; predicted codes permit targeted data deletion or consent changes, but not data access.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
